About 25 m of 1.8 m Colorbond fencing, supplied and installed.

This is a guide only, based on published 2026 Australian price guides (for example about $110 to $190 per metre installed for 1.8 m Colorbond). Your actual price depends on the site, the materials you choose and what the fencer finds when they measure up. The written quote is free.

What Changes the Price

  • Length and height. The biggest factors. Fences are priced by the metre, and taller fences need more material and stronger posts.
  • Material. Treated pine paling is usually cheapest, Colorbond sits in the middle, and glass and feature fences cost the most.
  • Old fence removal. Pulling out and disposing of an old fence adds to the job. Fibro fences need a licensed asbestos removalist.
  • Ground and access. Slopes, rock, hard clay, tree roots and tight access take longer.
  • Gates. Each gate adds hardware and labour. Automatic gates add a motor, safety sensors and power.
  • Retaining. Where the ground levels differ either side, a plinth or small retaining may be needed under the fence.

What a Good Quote Includes

  • The fencer's name, ABN and NSW contractor licence number
  • The fence type, height, colour or timber grade, post type and post spacing
  • The total length, and the price per metre if they quote that way
  • Whether removal and disposal of the old fence are included
  • Any gates, plinths or retaining, itemised
  • For jobs over $5,000, a written contract. In NSW a deposit can't be more than 10 percent of the price

Sharing the Cost With Your Neighbour

In NSW, the Dividing Fences Act 1991 says neighbours generally share the cost of a sufficient dividing fence equally. "Sufficient" means a fence that suits both properties, not the most expensive option either of you would like. If one neighbour wants something fancier, they usually pay the extra.

Most people sort it out with a friendly chat and a copy of the quote. If you can't agree, the formal first step is a fencing notice: a written notice to your neighbour describing the boundary, the type of fence you propose and the estimated cost, ideally with a quote attached. If there is still no agreement a month after the notice, either owner can apply to the Local Court, and free mediation is available through Community Justice Centres. Legal Aid NSW has a step-by-step guide.

Tip: ask the fencer to quote the dividing fence and any extras, such as gates on your side, separately. It makes the split much easier to agree.

Cost Questions

Why do fencing quotes vary so much?

Fencers price in different things. One may include removal of the old fence, a plinth and disposal, another may not. Compare what is included, not just the total or the price per metre.

Should I pay a deposit?

A deposit to order materials is normal. In NSW, the deposit for residential building work, including fencing, can't be more than 10 percent of the contract price. Be wary of anyone asking for a large payment up front.

Is Colorbond more expensive than timber?

Usually a little, per metre. Over the life of the fence Colorbond often works out about the same or cheaper, because it needs no painting or staining and isn't eaten by termites.

Does the fencer need a licence?

In NSW, fencing work worth more than $5,000 (labour and materials, including GST) must be done by someone with a contractor licence. We only refer to licensed fencers, whatever the size of the job.
